The history of brunch!

Did you know these interesting things about brunch?

Although the exact origin of brunches is a mystery, some say it was started by the Catholics who created brunches as a means of gathering after church service. Many had brunches as post church Sunday meals at the time.

Eventually, Sunday brunch started to become a popular meal in hotels and restaurants in 1900s America.

In 1931, a New York hotel called Rector’s became famous for its brunch. The brunch there was served with champagne, which contributed to the popularity of brunch as a luxurious weekend meal. Hollywood stars and elite New Yorkers began brunching and brunch was becoming a social event.

The term brunch is commonly considered to be coined by American restaurateur, Guy Beringer in the 1900s. He is often credited with popularising brunch in the early 20th century and getting it accepted as a form of meal by the general public.

He believed that brunch would be a meal that would bridge the gap between breakfast and lunch, and it would be more convenient for people who wanted to have a relaxing weekend brunch instead of having to go out for breakfast and lunch separately.

Hungarian Brunch?

More like traditional hungarian breakfast, here are some of the most popular ones:

It is not an every day thing to consume brunch in Hungary. The usual Hungarian breakfast consists of several sweet and savoury elements. Here we are going to share a few components of the Hungarian breakfast, you can try these at our favourite recommended places.

In our opinion the most famous breakfast element is kakaóscsiga or translated to English “chocolate swirl”. This is an all time favourite of both children and adults, with sweet chocolate in the crispy pastry. This is usually accompanied by a warm glass of milk or coffee.

Our second traditional meal that we want to mention, is bundás kenyér or some might know it as “french toast” in English. The only difference between this and the original french toast, is that it is salty and usually eaten with a side of sour-cream.

For those, who enjoy a hot meal for breakfast, we recommend trying rántotta or in English “scrambled eggs”. The only difference is, that we Hungarians like to have our rántotta with some kolbász, paprika and some onions. This might sound like a heavy breakfast, but as soon as you try it you will understand why we love it so much.

Lastly another sweet breakfast option is túróstáska, this is so authentic that there is no translation for it. This is a puff pastry filled with sweet cottage cheese and often topped with some raisins. This is the absolute most amazing and authentic breakfast item that you will find in Budapest, so we really recommend you to try it!
