ADOPTION CHECKLIST
What you need to know?
- Research Pet Care: Before considering adoption, research the specific care requirements of the type of pet
you’re interested in. Understand their temperament, exercise needs, grooming needs, and potential health
concerns. - Evaluate Your Lifestyle: Assess your lifestyle and determine if you can provide a pet with a suitable home.
Consider your living space, daily routine, and financial situation. - Discuss with Family: If you have a family, involve everyone in the decision-making process. Discuss potential
challenges and ensure everyone is on board with the commitment of pet ownership. - Prepare Your Home: Pet-proof your home to ensure a safe environment for your new furry friend. Secure
hazardous items, remove poisonous plants, and designate a pet-friendly area. - Gather Essential Supplies: Stock up on essential pet supplies before bringing your new companion home. This
includes food and water bowls, food, toys, a leash or collar, and grooming tools.
- Prepare for Arrival: Once your adoption application is approved, prepare for your new pet’s arrival. Set up a
designated sleeping area, create a feeding and watering station, and introduce your pet to their new
environment gradually. - Schedule Veterinary Check-up: Within a week of adoption, schedule a check-up with a veterinarian to ensure
your pet’s health and address any potential issues early on. - Establish a Routine: Create a consistent routine for your pet, including regular feeding times, exercise
schedules, and playtime. This helps them feel secure and adapt to their new home. - Provide Training and Socialization: Enroll in obedience training classes to help your pet learn basic commands
and good manners. Socialize them with other pets and people to prevent behavioral issues. - Show Patience and Love: Understand that it takes time for your new pet to adjust to their new environment
and bond with you. Be patient, provide consistent love and attention, and enjoy the companionship of your
furry companion.
- Age Requirements:
It is required you to be at least 21 years old to adopt a pet. - Valid Identification: In order to verify your age and where you live, you’ll need to provide valid identification to
shelter or rescue staff. - Family Meet and Greet:
It’s a good idea to make sure everyone in the family gets along with the new pet, which is
why most shelters and rescues require a family meet-and-greet before adoption. Everyone in
the home, including dogs and cats that already live with you, should meet the pet you want to
adopt to see if they’ll be a good fit for your family. Shelter staff wants to see that a pet is
adopted into a comfortable and loving environment. - Adoption Fee:
Lastly, the adoption fee typically covers basic veterinary care (like initial shots, spay or neuter), as well as housing, food, and transportation the pet
received while they were in the care of the shelter or rescue.
